2017 Rotary Wine and Cheese Extravaganza

Saturday marked the 23rd annual Wine and Cheese Extravaganza, and the Rotary Club did not disappoint. Easily 150 people or more ate cheese, drank wine, bid on auction items, won prizes, laughed, and generally had a good time, thanks to the hard working Rotarians and the many sponsors.

The cheese sampling, courtesy of Bandon’s own Face Rock Creamery, included samples of cheese from around the northwest and around the world.  The cheese, made from the milk of cows, sheep, goats, and even water buffalo, filled a number of tables.  Face Rock Creamery was, of course, featured with its amazing cloth-bound cheddar.

Representatives from Oregon wineries were pouring samples (three were included with the price of admission) of some of their finest varieties.  A pairing expert was on hand for the first hour to suggest a specific wine that goes nicely with a specific cheese.  Even those of us who are not connoisseurs could appreciate just how delicious the right pairing can be.

An amazing spread of hors d’oeuvres created by Coastal Mist was available throughout the evening.  From the savory to the sweet, there was something for everyone, and of course, it all went stunningly well with wine!

While some were enjoying their wine and cheese, others were perusing and bidding on silent auction items.   59 different fabulous packages went home with the highest bidder.  These included an overnight stay at Skamania Lodge donated by the Mill Casino and The Estates Group, Sunglasses from Bandon Vision Center, a spa basket, salon fun at Glitter ‘N Glow, golf at Bandon Crossings, a wine maker’s dinner at Alloro, and some stylish designs from Devon’s Boutique.

An exciting live auction sent determined bidders with another set of 12 goodies.  Items included a craftsman desk hand made and donated by Bart Stein, four rounds of golf at the Bandon Dunes, a year of water services, and a whiskey tasting with Edgewater’s hors d’oeuvres donated by Rotary president Scott McEachern.

Raffle tickets were drawn throughout the night for more exciting prizes.  It was hard to walk away empty-handed!

The Wine and Cheese Extravaganza is one of the critical fund-raising events for the Bandon Rotary Club.  Since 1974, Bandon Rotarians have been working on projects focused on the persistent issues in the world and tailor much of their work to the specific needs of the community.  Their ongoing projects include Ready to Smile, Shoes That Fit, Rotary Youth Leadership, and scholarships for graduating high school seniors.  Their current projects are focused on advancing literacy in our area and meeting the needs of Bandon veterans.
