Recreation & Natural Beauty
Circles in the Sand: In the spirit of forest bathing (hiking in the forest for health of mind & body) the locals here walk on the beach. It is a remarkable way to help maintain your overall health. Local labyrinth artist Denny Dyke started a project in 2011 to attract more attention to this valuable resource. The first Dreamfield Labyrinth was realized in 2014. Artworks are created on the sand that is connected by a sand labyrinth. The public is invited to walk the path. This is a seasonal event beginning in May. It is very telling of the spirit of our community. The 2023 Circles in the Sand calendar will inspire you throughout the year, to return for a walk on the beach. To your health!
Biking: Oregon is a bike rider’s paradise. Mountain bikers of all levels can pick their best challenge in the evolving system of the Whiskey Run Trails in the Coos County Forest. Road bikers can enjoy an eleven mile stretch of the Wild Rivers Coast Scenic Bikeway on Elk River Road for a quick outing or connect to the bikeway for a 60-mile journey through North Curry County. Fat bike riders can enjoy beach riding to their heart’s content. There is a 6.5 mile loop outlined by Bandon Bicycle Works leading ridings through paved streets and the beach and a 19 mile beach ride outlined by Travel Oregon.
Golf: Golf is played all year long in Bandon. There are two golf resorts. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (six courses that include award winners) and Bandon Crossings Golf Course (a more budget-friendly course but very playable and in excellent shape). If you haven’t played, or haven’t picked your clubs up recently, there are programs designed for novice and experienced players alike.
Beaches: All of the beaches in Oregon are public, and we have a lot of beaches in Bandon. The beaches are a great place for swimming, surfing, running, dog walking, horseback riding, fat bike riding, bird watching and just unwinding from the modern world. The area sea stacks are inspiring. They provide a habitat for shorebirds and sea life. These steep columns of rock along the coast give comfort and inspiration to all who live and play in this idyllic landscape. You can also enjoy the bounty of the ocean by harvesting shellfish and fishing. Sea perch, greenling, and black snapper are common here. Crabbing and clamming are also met with great anticipation when the season is open (check with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for licensing and regulations).
